Vietnam — The Full-Country Experience

🗺️
One Country — Five Completely Different Worlds
Vietnam stretches 1,650 km from north to south. This 9N/10D circuit covers all of it: Hanoi (colonial Old Quarter, ancient temples), Ha Long Bay (UNESCO karst islands rising from emerald water), Hue (Imperial Citadel, royal tombs, Perfume River), Hoi An (lantern-lit ancient town, silk tailors, white-sand beaches), and Ho Chi Minh City (energy, history, street food). No other destination in the collection covers this much cultural, natural and culinary ground.
🏮
Hoi An — The Most Photogenic Town in Southeast Asia
Hoi An Ancient Town is UNESCO-listed and entirely pedestrianised at night. Silk lanterns of every colour hang above the candlelit streets. The Japanese Covered Bridge has stood since the 17th century. Tailors can produce custom-made garments in 24–48 hours. On Full Moon (15th of the lunar month) the entire town is lit by lanterns with no electric lights. This is the emotional centrepiece of the Vietnam package.
🚢
Ha Long Bay — UNESCO Wonder of the World
1,969 limestone karst islands rising from emerald-green water. Overnight cruise is the only way to experience it properly — kayaking through sea caves at sunrise, swimming in isolated lagoons, watching the mist lift from the peaks at dawn. There is no equivalent landscape anywhere else in the collection.
🌿
Buddhist "Chay" Cuisine — Excellent for Vegetarians
Vietnam has a strong Buddhist vegetarian tradition — "ăn chay" (eating vegetarian). The 1st and 15th of the lunar month are Buddhist vegetarian days when entire markets and restaurants serve only plant-based food. Hue has a particularly strong Buddhist vegetarian restaurant culture due to its historic role as Vietnam's imperial Buddhist city. Tofu, rice, vegetable curries, spring rolls and pho are all easily made vegetarian.

The Hai Van Pass — Do NOT Skip This
The mountain road between Hue and Da Nang (en route to Hoi An) is one of the most scenic drives in Asia. The pass rises to 496m above sea level with the South China Sea on one side and forested mountains on the other. Hire a private car for the Hue–Hoi An leg specifically to travel this route — a bus takes a tunnel and misses it entirely.

Vegetarian Food — Buddhism Delivers

🌿
Chay — Vietnam's Buddhist Vegetarian System
"Ăn chay" (eating vegetarian) is embedded in Vietnamese Buddhist culture. The 1st and 15th days of every lunar month are Buddhist vegetarian days — on these days, entire street food markets convert to plant-based only, and restaurants that normally serve meat offer chay menus. This is not for tourists — it is a living religious practice that makes vegetarian eating in Vietnam genuinely easy if you time it right.
🍜 Best Naturally Vegetarian Dishes
Phở chay (vegetarian noodle soup), Bánh mì chay (vegetarian baguette sandwich), Cơm chay (vegetarian rice platter), Gỏi cuốn chay (fresh spring rolls with tofu + herbs), Chả giò chay (fried spring rolls), Bún bò Huế chay (Hue-style noodle soup, vegetarian version).
🏮 City by City
Hanoi: Chay restaurants in Old Quarter alleys. Hue: Best Buddhist vegetarian city in Vietnam — quan chay near pagodas. Hoi An: Mango Mango, Streets Restaurant (training vegetarian dishes). HCMC: Hum Vegetarian Lounge (upmarket), many quan chay in District 3.
⚠️ Ingredients to Watch
Fish sauce (nước mắm) goes into most Vietnamese dishes. Shrimp paste (mắm tôm) in some soups. Oyster sauce in stir-fries. Specify "không nước mắm" (no fish sauce) every time. At quan chay restaurants everything is already vegetarian — safe by default.
☕ Egg Coffee — Hanoi's Unique Treat
Cà phê trứng — Vietnamese egg coffee. Whipped egg yolk + condensed milk on top of dark robusta coffee. Invented at Cafe Dinh (Đinh Tiên Hoàng, Old Quarter) in 1946 when fresh milk was scarce. Not vegan — but the most unique coffee drink in Asia. The yolk version is considered vegetarian by most traditions.
🗣️ Essential Vietnamese Phrases — Vegetarian

Không cá (Khong ca)
