Why Seychelles Is Extraordinary

🪨
The Only Tropical Destination Built on Ancient Granite
Unlike coral atolls (Maldives, Mauritius), the Seychelles' main islands are granite — 750 million years old, the only oceanic granitic islands on Earth. This creates the iconic landscape: enormous rounded boulders, prehistoric-feeling forests, and beaches found nowhere else. Anse Source d'Argent on La Digue is the most photographed beach in the world.
🌴
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 115 Islands
Vallée de Mai (Praslin) — the only place on Earth where the Coco de Mer palm grows wild. The Coco de Mer produces the world's largest seed (25 kg). Aldabra Atoll — the world's largest raised coral atoll, home to 150,000 giant tortoises. No other island nation in the world has two UNESCO sites relative to its size.
⚠️
Travel Authorization — Apply Before Flying
Seychelles is visa-free for ALL nationalities but you MUST apply for the free Seychelles Travel Authorization (STA) online BEFORE your flight. Website: seychelleselv.govse.com — takes 1–3 working days. Apply at least a week before travel. Without it, you may be denied boarding.
🚲
La Digue Has No Cars — Bicycles Only
La Digue is one of the last places in the world where bicycles are the primary transport. The island is entirely car-free except for essential service vehicles. Hire a bicycle immediately at the ferry port (SCR 100–150/day). This is part of the island's extraordinary charm — cycling past giant tortoises to the world's most beautiful beach.

Vegetarian Food — Plan Ahead

⚠️
Creole Cuisine Is Fish-Heavy — Alert Every Establishment
Traditional Seychellois Creole cuisine centres on fish and seafood — octopus curry, fish rougaille, grilled tuna. Specify "pure vegetarian, no fish, no seafood" at every meal. Many sauces are fish-based. Self-catering apartments are the most reliable option for strict vegetarians.
🛒 Self-Catering — Best Strategy
Victoria market has excellent fresh tropical produce. Budget self-catering apartments on Mahé and Praslin have kitchens. Stock up at the market (papaya, mango, jackfruit, breadfruit) and cook your own meals. Significantly reduces costs AND vegetarian uncertainty.
🍽️ Naturally Vegetarian Creole Dishes
Ladob (banana in coconut milk — vegan), Breadfruit dishes, Chutney, Pickled papaya (chatini papaye), Coconut rice. Ask specifically for vegetable rougaille (tomato-based sauce). Indian-influenced Mauritian diaspora restaurants in Victoria.
🏨 Resort Dining
All luxury resorts (Four Seasons, Raffles, Banyan Tree, Constance Lémuria) have dedicated vegetarian menus. Alert at booking and again at check-in. Executive chefs will prepare dedicated vegetarian degustation menus with advance notice.
🏖️ Beach Restaurants
Anse Lazio has two restaurants (La Pirogue, Bonbon Plume) — both can do vegetarian plates with advance notice. La Digue village has small Creole takeaways where you can specify vegetarian rice and curry. Always ask before ordering.
💡
One Word to Learn in Seychellois Creole
"San pwason" = without fish. "Vegetaryen" is understood. Say both at every restaurant. Seychellois people are warm and accommodating — once you explain clearly, they will go out of their way to prepare a good meal for you.
