At-a-Glance

Three adults travelling together at a relaxed, culture-and-food-first pace — comfort over rush, meaningful stops over box-ticking.

Getting there — target flights

WhoRouteReturn target
All 3 adultsBOM → HAN (Hanoi) · IndiGo/Air India codeshare via Bangkok or Singapore, or Vietnam Airlines via SGNReturn BOM–HAN target ~USD 420–580 pp booked 8–10 weeks out; open-jaw BOM→HAN / DAD→BOM saves backtracking
Internal (mid-trip)HAN → DAD (Da Nang) · Vietnam Airlines or Bamboo Airways domesticTarget ~USD 35–55 pp one-way; book same time as international flights

Prices above are Feb–Mar economy targets from Mumbai. Open-jaw routing (fly into Hanoi, out of Da Nang) eliminates a 16-hour backtrack and is strongly recommended.

Getting around

Trains + private cars + one domestic flight — no motorbikes
Hanoi city: Grab car app or metered taxi — safe, cheap, no haggling needed
Hanoi → Ninh Binh: private hired car (~2.5 hrs, ~$40–50 for the car one-way, split 3 ways)
Ninh Binh → Hanoi → fly Da Nang: same private car return then domestic flight
Da Nang ↔ Hoi An: Grab car or hotel shuttle, 30 min, ~$6–9 per trip
Hoi An → Da Nang Airport: Grab car, ~$8–12 per trip
Phu Quoc Island: airport transfers and island trips by metered taxi or Grab car
Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber equivalent) works in all major cities; download before you fly. Avoid unlicensed tuk-tuks in tourist zones.

The Gentle North-to-South: Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Hoi An → Phu Quoc

February–March delivers Vietnam's sweet spot: Hanoi is cool and clear (18–24°C), Hoi An is dry and breezy, and Phu Quoc sits in its best beach season before April heat arrives. The route covers roughly 2,000 km south by air and transfer — never by motorbike — with four unhurried bases and zero back-tracking.

Day 20 (departure)
fly home
Phu Quoc → MumbaiTaxi to Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC); direct or via SGN to BOM — check open-jaw routing booked at startEarly departure recommended; airport has good fruit and light vegetarian options airside
The open-jaw trick: flying INTO Hanoi and OUT OF Da Nang (or Phu Quoc) saves you a 16-hour bus or overnight train backtrack, costs the same or less than a return, and gives the trip a clean southward narrative. Book it as two one-way tickets or ask a consolidator for an open-jaw fare.

Worth knowing

Skip Ha Long Bay in this trip: it adds a full extra travel day from Hanoi, the bay is genuinely crowded in Feb–Mar, and Ninh Binh (Trang An) delivers 90% of the karst drama with zero boat-party chaos. Also skip Sapa in February unless you love cold fog — it's beautiful in April–May. Ho Chi Minh City can be a half-day layover on the way home if curiosity strikes, but 18 nights is already full.

⚠️ Honest Budget Warning — Your $500 Ceiling Cannot Cover This Trip. A stated budget of $500 total for 3 adults, 18 nights in Vietnam is not achievable — not even close. International flights alone from Mumbai will cost $1,260–$1,740 for 3 people. The most stripped-back version of this trip (budget guesthouses, street food only, fewest activities) lands at ~$3,560 total, which is ~$1,187 per person. If $500 is truly the total ceiling, the honest advice is: shorten the trip to 7–8 nights (reduce lodging and domestic flights significantly), travel during shoulder season for cheaper fares, and reduce the party size or one person travels on a tighter solo budget. Alternatively, if $500 is per person and you have ~$1,500–$1,800 total, a lean 10-night version of this route is achievable.
Biggest single lever: flights. International airfares represent 35–40% of total trip cost. Booking 10–12 weeks ahead, being flexible on connection cities (Bangkok vs Singapore vs Kuala Lumpur), and using an open-jaw routing (in Hanoi, out Da Nang or Phu Quoc) are the three moves that most dramatically reduce cost. Set fare alerts on Google Flights for BOM–HAN starting now.
Vegetarian food budget advantage. Vietnam is genuinely excellent for vegetarian travellers, and com chay (Buddhist vegetarian) restaurants are plentiful and cheap — often $1.50–3 per main dish. Your food costs will be 20–30% lower than an equivalent meat-eating group, which partially offsets other costs. Hoi An and Hanoi in particular have outstanding vegetarian menus.
