Varanasi — The World's Oldest Living City | Complete Visitor Guide 2026

Varanasi (Kashi, Benares) is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities and Hinduism's holiest. Complete guide for first-time visitors in 2026.

Why Varanasi Is Like Nowhere Else on Earth

Varanasi — also known as Kashi (City of Light) and Benares — has been continuously inhabited for at least 3,000 years, making it one of the world's oldest living cities. It is the holiest city in Hinduism: a place where, according to tradition, to die is to receive moksha (liberation) from the cycle of rebirth. The result is a city where life, death, devotion and the mundane exist in extraordinary, overwhelming proximity. Nothing prepares a first-time visitor for Varanasi. Nothing.

The Ghats — Varanasi's Heart

87 stone staircases (ghats) descend to the Ganga river along a 6.5 km arc. Each ghat has its specific purpose and community. Key ghats:

Morning Boat Ride

The single most important experience in Varanasi: a rowing boat at dawn, watching the ghats from the river as the city wakes up. Pilgrims bathing, priests performing puja, the fires of Manikarnika, the light changing on the sandstone. Budget INR 200–500 for a one-hour private boat. Negotiate at any ghat.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple

The most sacred Shiva temple in Hinduism. The existing structure dates to 1780 but the sacred site is ancient. Non-Hindus have historically had limited access — the rules have evolved and the temple complex was substantially rebuilt and expanded in 2021. Check current entry policies before visiting.

📿 Spiritual note: Varanasi functions simultaneously as a tourist attraction and an intensely active spiritual city. The Ganga is not scenic backdrop — it is considered the physical manifestation of the goddess Ganga. The cremations at Manikarnika are not performance — they are the daily reality of a sacred tradition. Approach with respect.

Food in Varanasi

Varanasi has a famous vegetarian food culture. Must-try: Kachori sabzi (fried dough with spiced vegetable curry, the classic breakfast), Malaiyyo (winter seasonal — whipped sweet cream dessert), Baati Chokha (wheat dough balls with mashed vegetables), Lassi from the Blue Lassi Shop. The Shivala and Assi areas have excellent modern cafés alongside ancient chaaiwallas.
