The old city lanes, havelis (merchant mansions) with elaborately carved facades, and rooftop restaurants create an atmosphere of medieval magnificence that no other Rajasthan city quite matches.

Sam Sand Dunes — The Classic Experience

42 km west of Jaisalmer, Sam (pronounced "Sum") hosts the most developed desert camp area. At sunset, dozens of cameliers and their camels assemble for the classic photo of a lifetime. Overnight camps range from budget tents to luxury Swiss tents with attached bathrooms, Rajasthani cultural performances, and dinner around the bonfire. For most visitors, Sam is the right choice — accessible, reliable, well-organised.

Khuri — Quieter Alternative

48 km from Jaisalmer, Khuri is less developed and less crowded than Sam. The small village has family-run guesthouses offering homestay-style desert experiences that feel more authentic. The dunes here are smaller but the atmosphere is more intimate. Recommended for travellers who want to avoid crowds.
