OCI Application Stuck Past 6 Weeks? How to Still Plan Your India Trip in 2025

Practical NRI guide to OCI delays: what unblocks approval, when to book Gujarat/Rajasthan tours, refund-safe itineraries, and visa workarounds from an Ahmedabad tour designer.

Namaste โ€” Shivani here from Ahmedabad. I design tours for NRI families across Gujarat, Rajasthan and the spiritual circuit, and at least twice a week now I get the same panicked WhatsApp: "Shivani, my OCI is stuck. Should I book the tour or cancel?"

I saw a thread on r/NRI last week โ€” applicant past six weeks waiting, status frozen at "Under Process," flights already booked. The comments were the usual mix of "mine took 3 months," "mine took 8 days," "call the consulate." Not very helpful when you're trying to decide whether to commit to a Diwali family trip.

So here is what I actually tell my clients โ€” from someone who books their hotels in Udaipur and their Somnath darshan slots, not someone trying to sell you immigration consulting.

First โ€” what "awaiting approval" usually means

OCI processing in 2024-25 has been genuinely slower than the pre-pandemic 4-6 week norm. Some honest realities:

Always check the current process on the official portal: ociservices.gov.in. Don't rely on what worked for your cousin three years ago.

What actually unblocks a stuck application

From the clients I've helped (informally โ€” I'm not an immigration lawyer, just someone who's watched this play out many times):

  1. Email your specific Indian Mission with your file number. Not the generic OCI inbox. Find the consular section email for the embassy/consulate that received your file. Polite, one paragraph, file number in subject line. This works more often than people think.
  2. Re-upload your renunciation certificate as a clean colour scan if there's any doubt. If you don't have one and you naturalised after Jan 2010, you'll likely need to obtain one before approval moves.
  3. Check your spam folder weekly. The system sometimes sends a "query raised" email and the application sits frozen until you respond. I've seen people wait 4 months because they missed an email asking for a document clarification.
  4. If past 90 days, raise a grievance on the CPGRAMS portal. Genuine grievances with file numbers do get attention โ€” not always fast, but it creates a paper trail.

The travel question โ€” should you book your India trip?

Here is where I can actually help. The honest answer is: yes, but structure it so a delayed OCI doesn't bankrupt you.

Option 1: Travel on e-Visa while OCI is pending

If you're a foreign passport holder with a pending OCI, you can absolutely apply for a regular tourist e-Visa in parallel. This is legal and common. The e-Visa is typically issued in 3-5 business days and is valid for 30 days, 1 year, or 5 years depending on category.

Caveat I always mention: once your OCI is approved, you cannot enter India on the e-Visa โ€” you must enter on your OCI. So if approval lands while you're mid-booking, you'll need to update the airline with your OCI card number. Not a disaster, just paperwork.

Option 2: Lock in refundable / flexible tours

This is what I structure for OCI-pending clients. The Gujarat and Rajasthan circuit has a lot of moving parts โ€” heritage hotels in Udaipur and Jaisalmer often want 50% non-refundable deposits 60 days out, and that's where people get burned.

Tours I'll comfortably book for OCI-pending travellers with flexible terms:

What I ask OCI-pending clients to send me

If you're planning with me or anyone else, before you put deposits down:

With that, I can tell you which segments to confirm now and which to hold. For example: I'll happily confirm your Ahmedabad airport pickup and first 3 nights, but hold the Jaisalmer desert camp booking until 30 days out.

One more honest note about timing

Rajasthan peak season runs October through February. If you wait until your OCI is approved to start planning, the good heritage properties in Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer are often gone for Diwali, Christmas and New Year weeks. That's the real cost of waiting โ€” not the booking itself, but losing the rooms you actually wanted.

My suggestion: start the conversation now, lock in the lower-risk segments, and we'll layer the rest as your documents land. If your OCI never arrives in time, we pivot you onto an e-Visa and the trip still happens.

If you want me to look at a specific itinerary against your application timeline, send me your rough dates and where you are in the OCI process. No commitment โ€” I'd rather tell you honestly to wait three weeks than book you into deposits you'll lose.
