North East India Travel Guide 2026 — Meghalaya, Assam and Nagaland
The hidden gem of India's northeast — living root bridges, tea estates, wildlife and tribal culture.
Meghalaya — The Abode of Clouds
The wettest region on Earth produces extraordinary living landscapes. Living root bridges (naturally engineered over 100+ years by the Khasi people) near Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong. The village of Mawlynnong is Asia's cleanest village. Dawki river's crystal-clear water creates the illusion of boats floating on air.
Assam and Kaziranga
Kaziranga National Park is home to the world's largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses (2,600+). Elephant safari at dawn is how you see them. Also tigers, wild water buffalo, and elephants. Tea estates near Jorhat offer plantation homestays.
Permits and Access
Inner Line Permits (ILP) required for Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur — obtainable at state capitals or online. Meghalaya and Assam: open access for Indian and foreign nationals.
