Kashmir Houseboats and Dal Lake — Complete Visitor Guide 2026
The classic Kashmir houseboat experience on Dal Lake. What to expect, which boats to choose, best season and Mughal gardens.
Dal Lake and Its Houseboats
Dal Lake in Srinagar is one of the world's most iconic travel experiences. Traditional cedar-wood houseboats with carved interiors and sit-out decks on the water. Shikara (paddled boat) transport between houseboats and the shore. A unique and genuinely beautiful way to experience Kashmir.
Choosing Your Houseboat
Houseboats are classified from Category A (luxury) to D (budget). Category A offers full-service with meals, hot water, and carved woodwork. Category B-C is good value. Avoid unregistered boats — use J&K Tourism registered vessels.
Mughal Gardens and Srinagar
Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi — terraced Mughal gardens above Dal Lake. Old Srinagar and its Sufi shrines. The Hazratbal Mosque on the lake shore. Best experienced in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October).
