India Train Travel — Complete Guide to Indian Railways 2026
Everything you need to know about travelling India by train. Classes, booking on IRCTC, tatkal tickets, night trains, tips from experience and what to expect.
Why Trains Are the Best Way to See India
India's railway network — covering 68,000+ km of track and carrying over 23 million passengers daily — is more than infrastructure. It's a travelling cross-section of Indian society. In an overnight sleeper from Delhi to Varanasi, you'll share a carriage with pilgrims, software engineers, farmers, students, and joint families with three generations sharing a single berth. There is no better school of India than its trains.
Train Classes — What You Need to Know
Sleeper Class (SL)
The most affordable option. Open bunks in groups of six — two bays of three berths facing each other across the aisle. No AC. Windows with bars. The authentic India experience. Bedding not provided. Luggage goes under the lower berth. Best for short journeys under 8 hours and for those who want maximum immersion in Indian travel culture.
3AC (3 Tier Air Conditioned)
The budget traveller's sweet spot. Same bunk configuration as Sleeper but with AC, curtains for each bay, and clean sheets and pillow provided. Significantly more comfortable for overnight journeys. Recommended for anything over 8 hours.
2AC (2 Tier Air Conditioned)
Four berths per bay with more privacy and wider berths. Curtains for entire bay. More comfortable for long journeys and worth the premium for older travellers.
1AC (First Class Air Conditioned)
Lockable cabins of 2 or 4 berths. The premium option — comparable to a good hotel room on wheels. Used by business travellers and senior officials. Premium priced but still remarkably cheap by international standards.
Booking on IRCTC
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website and app (irctc.co.in) is the official booking platform. Foreign nationals can register and book directly. Steps:
- Register at irctc.co.in — you'll need to verify your email and mobile
- Search trains by source and destination station and travel date
- Check availability — "Available" (confirm), "RAC" (reservation against cancellation — you share a berth but will likely get a full one), "WL" (waitlist — only book if confident enough will cancel)
- Pay by international card (UPI not always available to foreign nationals)
💡 Tatkal quota: Tatkal tickets open 1 day before travel (8am for AC classes) at 25–30% premium over regular fare. If you've missed regular booking, this is your emergency option. Move fast — they sell out within minutes for popular routes.
Practical Tips
- Download IRCTC Rail Connect app — track your train's live position
- Carry a padlock and chain for your luggage to the berth frame overnight
- Station food (Veg thali at platform restaurants) is generally safe — stick to freshly cooked
- PNR number is your booking ID — use it to check status
- Night trains for long distances are ideal — saves a night's accommodation cost
