Himachal Pradesh Trekking Guide 2026 — Best Treks, Seasons & Difficulty
Complete guide to trekking in Himachal Pradesh. Spiti Valley, Hampta Pass, Pin Parvati, Beas Kund and more. Difficulty ratings, best season, permits and preparation.
Why Himachal Pradesh for Trekking?
Himachal Pradesh — the "Abode of Snow" — stretches from the Himalayan foothills to the high-altitude trans-Himalayan plateaux of Lahaul and Spiti. Its trekking landscape encompasses tropical forest, alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and barren moonscapes above 4,000m. Unlike neighbouring Uttarakhand (home to Kedarnath and Badrinath), Himachal's most dramatic regions — Spiti, Kinnaur, the Pir Panjal — see fewer trekkers, preserving a quality of solitude that is increasingly rare in the Himalayas.
Easy-Moderate Treks (No prior experience needed)
Triund (Dharamsala) — 2,875m
One of the most accessible Himalayan viewpoints. A 9 km climb from McLeod Ganj through rhododendron forest to a ridge with panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range. Overnight camping at the top. Best April–June and September–November.
Beas Kund — 3,700m
Near Manali, 3 days, 22 km. The source of the Beas river. Glacial landscape with excellent acclimatisation value. Suitable for trekking beginners with reasonable fitness.
Moderate Treks (Some experience/fitness required)
Hampta Pass — 4,270m
4–5 days. One of Himachal's classic crossings — from the lush Kullu Valley over the pass into the arid Lahaul landscape. The dramatic contrast on either side of the pass is extraordinary. Best: July–September.
Bhrigu Lake — 4,300m
3–4 days from Manali. High-altitude lake set in a hanging valley above the treeline. Excellent acclimatisation for those planning higher objectives. Snow for most of the season.
Challenging Treks (Experience and preparation required)
Pin Parvati Pass — 5,319m
7–10 days. Crosses from Kullu to Spiti over a high glacial pass. Physically demanding, route-finding challenges, glacier travel. Hire an experienced guide.
Spiti Valley Circuit — 4,000–4,570m
High-altitude plateau trekking through ancient Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, villages with 1,000-year histories, and landscapes of extraordinary austere beauty. Road-accessible in parts — can be done by jeep + trekking combination.
📋 Permits: Inner Line Permits (ILP) are required for certain restricted areas in Himachal — Kinnaur, Spiti, Lahaul. These are obtainable at district headquarters (Reckong Peo for Kinnaur, Kaza for Spiti). Allow a day. Foreigners may have additional restrictions in certain areas — verify current rules before planning.
