Gujarat Tourism Guide 2026 — Culture, Wildlife, Temples & the Rann of Kutch

Complete guide to Gujarat's best travel destinations. Rann of Kutch, Gir Lion Safari, Dwarka, Somnath, Ahmedabad heritage and the Gujarat tourism circuit for 2026.

Why Gujarat Is India's Most Underrated Travel Destination

While Gujarat rarely tops the international traveller's bucket list, those who come invariably leave with it as a highlight. It has the only population of Asiatic lions remaining outside Africa (Gir National Park), the world's largest salt desert (the Great Rann of Kutch), one of India's best-preserved medieval heritage cities (Ahmedabad — India's first UNESCO World Heritage City), ancient Jain temples of breathtaking artistry, and a vegetarian food culture that produces some of India's most distinctive and beloved cuisine.

Ahmedabad — India's First UNESCO World Heritage City

Ahmedabad's old city was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017 — the first Indian city to receive it. The walled old city (Walled City of Ahmedabad) contains extraordinary 15th–19th century architecture: the Jama Masjid, Sidi Saiyyed Mosque (the Sidi Saiyyed ni Jali — the stone lattice window — is one of the most beautiful objects in India), Swaminarayan Temple complex, and hundreds of historic pols (neighbourhood clusters). The Sabarmati Ashram — Gandhi's base during the independence movement — is essential.

Gir National Park — Asiatic Lions

The only place on Earth you can see wild Asiatic lions. Gir Wildlife Sanctuary covers 1,412 km² of deciduous forest. Lion sightings are virtually guaranteed — the population has grown to 600+ and density is high. Safaris run in the early morning and late afternoon (mandatory jeep safari with mandatory guide). Best October–June (park closes during monsoon). Booking safari slots requires advance booking via the Gujarat Forest Department online portal.

The Great Rann of Kutch

The world's largest salt desert. In the dry season (October–March), the 23,300 km² of the Great Rann is a vast white expanse stretching to the horizon under blue sky — one of the planet's most otherworldly landscapes. The annual Rann Utsav festival (November–February) sets up a luxury tented city at Dhordo village with cultural performances, craft markets, and excursions onto the salt flats. The white desert under a full moon is a surreal, unforgettable experience.

Dwarkadhish Temple & Somnath — Pilgrimage Circuit

Two of the most significant Hindu temples in India are in Gujarat's coastal Saurashtra region. Dwarkadhish (Dwarka) — one of the four sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites) of Hinduism. Somnath — the first of the 12 jyotirlinga temples of Shiva, rebuilt multiple times after historical destruction. A coastal Saurashtra circuit combining Gir, Somnath, and Dwarka is one of India's great pilgrimage routes.

🍽️ Gujarat food note: Gujarat has India's most celebrated vegetarian cuisine. The traditional unlimited Gujarati thali — dal, kadhi, multiple sabzis, rotli, rice, papad, pickle, farsan (snacks) and dessert — is an experience in itself. Manek Chowk in Ahmedabad's old city transforms into a food street from evening — do not miss.
