Goa Travel Guide 2026 — Best Beaches, Season, Budgets & Where to Stay
Complete guide to Goa in 2026. North Goa vs South Goa, best beaches for different travellers, accommodation from budget to luxury, and practical tips for first-timers.
Goa: India's Beach Capital
Goa — a 3,702 km² state on India's southwestern coast, formerly a Portuguese colony until 1961 — is India's most popular beach destination for domestic and international tourists alike. Its 105 km coastline offers everything from lively party beaches to utterly secluded coves. Its colonial architecture, fusion cuisine, relaxed pace and distinctive culture (genuinely distinct from the rest of India) make it more than just a beach holiday.
North Goa vs. South Goa — The Essential Choice
The Mandovi River divides Goa into two very different experiences:
North Goa
More developed, louder, party-focused. Beaches like Baga, Calangute, and Anjuna are busy with beach shacks, live music, flea markets, and the famous Goa nightlife. Cheaper accommodation. More backpacker crowd. Anjuna Flea Market (every Wednesday) is iconic. Also home to quieter options like Vagator and Morjim (turtle nesting beach).
South Goa
More pristine, quieter, upmarket. Palolem Beach is a beautiful crescent bay — the most photographed in Goa. Agonda is even quieter. Colva and Benaulim are older beach resorts with more resort-style infrastructure. South Goa's slower pace suits couples, families, and those who've done the party circuit and want peace.
Best Beaches for Different Travellers
- Families: Candolim (North), Benaulim (South) — calmer waters, more infrastructure
- Party/nightlife: Baga, Calangute, Anjuna (North)
- Backpackers: Arambol (far north), Palolem (south)
- Luxury: Arossim, Cavelossim (South) — 5-star resort belt
- Yoga/wellness: Assagao and Morjim (North) — growing wellness hub
When to Visit Goa
November–March is peak season — pleasant temperatures, low humidity, sea is calm and clear. December and New Year period is the absolute peak — prices double or triple, book months ahead. October and April are shoulder season — slightly hotter but much cheaper. May–September monsoon: most beach shacks close, seas are rough, but prices are a fraction and the landscape is stunning green.
💡 OTATTS tip: For Goa on a tour package from Gujarat, November–January is the classic choice. Many Gujarat families combine Goa with a Maharashtrian or Karnatakan extension. Ask about our Gujarat departure packages.
